Writing from Inside the Character

I’ve had several assignments lately in my writing class/critique group to write from inside the character. The class was instructed to explain a scenario in the story we were working on and elaborate on our character’s reaction and then our own reaction to the same situation and the justification of our actions. This is something I highly recommend, especially if you don’t really “know” a particular character very well.

I’m currently trying to develop a time-travel romance and the real dilemma for the heroine is whether to go to her new love or to stay in present day Chicago. My answer to the question posed in class was: If the possibility of time- travel existed and I had found the one whose heart linked with mine, I would also go to him.

But for a wanting heart the world would pass us by. To capture that moment in time when two hearts intertwine, the brush of cupid’s kiss, the prick of his arrow, is more than any mortal can hope to claim.

Ahhh – the stuff that romance is made of.

Blessings,

Victoria
